1813 Toned Classic Head Large Cent - Sheldon 293 - R2

Picked this up today. This was a challenging coin for me to grade, and figure out what I ought to pay for it. I was able to attribute it as Sheldon 293 (S-293). The main diagnostic is that the 3 in the date and Star 13 are close (about 1.5mm apart. There are only two die pairs for this date and the other variety has the 3 in the date and Star 13 very far apart (3.5mm). This was one of the easy ones to attribute, although not as easy as the 1809 which has only one know die pair.

The S-293 variety for this coin is thought to be Rarity 2. William Sheldon wrote that it is in the upper (scarcer) range of R2 and is the substantially scarcer of the two 1813 die pair varieties.

Classic Head large cents are scarce. The 1813 cents were among the issues with a mintage that was less than a million at 418,000.

Looks to be VF-30 details. Corroded and cleaned of course :)

From those pictures, I would think EF-40 Details.

Thanks. one of my favorite things about this coin is the center dot in the reverse of this coin. it looks like a perfectly formed semi-sphere popping out from the reverse fields.
