Reproduction California gold fractional with "love token" initials on the reverse.

Does the back look hand engraved? If so it's beautifully done!

to the CCF.

Concur that it is not likely gold ... for sure not an authentic California fractional gold piece ... and in all respect a reproduction at best.

That said ... the engraved reverse is lovely ... known in the numismatic community as a 'love token' ... and despite the questionable provenience of the host 'coin' ... the love token reverse makes this a compelling piece indeed.

Nice brite cut initials, typical for 1860-1900 jewelry and silverware. I'd guess a jeweler engraved it after grinding the reverse flat.

Many of them were made by jewellers as gifts, souvenirs and such. It's unusual to see one in love token form because they were already so small to begin with.

I think this is definitely late 19th c. and quite scarce. It may contain anywhere from no gold at all to maybe 8-10 kt. This is a high level of craftsmanship especially given the small surface area on which to work.

That is a very cool coin. Love token collectors would be very interested indeed. That was like meant to be a "charm" since it is so tiny.
