I see, but does the catalog price really reflect the value. I had a note that cataloged for $1,300. I collector contacted me and offered me $2,000 for it. They said it was a very hard note to locate.

I get the note isn't in UNC condition and will only be something a entry level collector will buy, but is there some under evaluation to special serial number notes in the catalog's.... It has to be worth more then face value..

Sometimes yes sometimes no It is a guide and collectors need to be willing to take the time to learn and see what the market is doing...

What was the note you are talking about and its condition?

A note is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it
but unless you want to keep it for a long time getting your money out will not be easy in my opinion

I have been selling collecting and trading notes for a very long time and if you offered it to me for $100 I would say no thank you...

What-Are-These-Bank-Notes EPQ

I actually bought it off a CCF member and was showing it off and asking for others opinion of it, when someone made me the offer. I couldn't refuse, although others have told me I will never see another.

First of all let me say that the note is very nice

As I have mentioned in another post the catalogue values are guides and should be treated as such..

Some notes are overvalued and some and undervalued

The most important thing that I can say is that a collector must be aware of market trends if they want to get the best value for their buck, but some notes are just in more demand than others and some notes may just be more desirable to a collector for other reasons and they are willing to pay more just to get that specific note at that specific time.

I personally have some notes that I would not sell for twice the catalogue price if offered at this time, however maybe down the road I would...

It is not so much that a similar note could not be found, but I personally know how hard some were to obtain and the odds of getting one again would be difficult to say the least.

When pricing notes in the catalogue many things must be taken into account...and the best way is to observe the market and see what sells and for how much.

Dealer sales, auction sales, personal collectors sales, online sales, etc...

Everyone realizes that the trend prices are not perfect but it gives one an idea...and remember prices are what the market will bear

There will always be cases when a seller must sell (for whatever reason) and a buyer gets a deal or a buyer wants or needs LOL a specific note and overpays for whatever reason...it is all part of the hobby

The other issue is are you collecting just because you enjoy it or are you seriously looking at this as an investment... everyone has their reasons
