G'Day Peoples,
Can anybody help me to identify this?
I am looking for opinions and approximate values as I have no idea what it is or what it's worth.
I picked it up with a bulk purchase of coins.
Do I drop it in some coin cleaner or leave it the way it is
Thanking you all in anticipation.

Hello and welcome!! I have no ides what the coin is but please do not clean it! Cleaning any coin generally ruins its value. I hope someone can help you identify the coin. Happy New Year, Mike

My initial feeling is that the portrait is Hermes or Mercury. Beyond that, I don't have an opinion. If I get time later, I'll see if I can find it in my Ancients book.

Hi King Coing! You may have an Early Muslim Pre-Reform coin. It looks like the coin is an Anonymous Khusro II type circa 656-670 A.D (AH 46-50) AR Drachm. My wife did the research to find this coin. I asked for her help as I was totally stumped! She is a history major and recognized the inscriptions on it from her Islamic studies. Here's the link! Mike

I'm glad we could help. I will pass the thank you on to my wife. I could not determine a value. Perhaps now that it is identified, someone will know the value. Mike

I bet you're right! It looks like a Sassanian coin to me (I have a few), but something about it doesn't seem to be quite the same as the usual ones; an early Islamic version would make sense.

It's interesting that Muslims used this style of coin at first. These coins are full of Zoroastrian symbolism; on the reverse is the usual image of a fire altar with two attendants. The obverse is the portrait of the Sassanian Emperor.

Unfortunately, I can't read the inscription on these coins, so I always have to rely on dealer attributions (which I hope are right), but I find them fascinating anyway. Usually, they sell for reasonable prices; decent ones can be found for under $50.

Although I'm nowhere near what one would call an expert on early muslim coins, I would say it one of the coins at http://www.grifterrec.com/coins/isl...sanian5.html

Most of the muslim coins shown have some writing on at 4 and 5 o'clock.

If you look at the sasanian empire coins they look like a more detailed version of yours.

Well my 2 cents worth- aggrees with the muslim verdict-but don't you think the wings at the top of the coin- are emblematic of what many Iragi and Iranian coins have on them. I recently acquired a late Iranian Railroad token and it has the same wing emblem on it as your coin - (Interesting to say the least) habiru001 -

Darkside Guru,

I purchased mine off ebay a little over a year ago. The attribution provided, Khusro II 656-670 is spot on.

Take care
Ben
