1999-D Dime Weak Strike - Coin Community Forum

I presume this dime was struck with inadequate striking pressure, although I suppose it could be a seriously filled die. It retains quite a bit of luster which I think rules out the possibility that it is just worn. If it is worn, it would be the first AG-03 clad dime I've ever seen! Report this Post to the Staff

The design rim is poorly developed, there is a beveled rim/edge junction and, presumably, the reeding is weak. Such weakness may be due to inadequate ram pressure or insufficient die approximation. Most weak strikes appear to be due to the latter. Error coin writer and researcher. Report this Post to the Staff

Not that he needs agreement ;-) It sure does look like a weak strike to me as well. Some folks call them "adjustment strikes" but I am not entirely sure how accurate that term is. pyrbob Rest in Peace United States 1943 Posts	Posted 06/01/2008 5:29 pm I have been thinking about the "insufficient die approximation". Is this when the distance the die travels on it's stroke as it strikes the coin is not set far enough to provide a deep enough strike? This is the only guess I could come up with so far.
