I came across this coin from my uncle (deceased). The inscription reads:'One of the first coins struck Canada'. Does anyone know anything about its origin, number made? THANX in advance Bill
According to the Charlton Catalogue 776,666 dimes were minted in 1908, which is low compared to 2.62 million in 1907, 1.7 million in 1906, and 1.697 million in 1909.
If that coin was one of the first coins struck for that year, it could add significantly to the value. The Charlton Standard Catalogue for Canadian Coins lists that coin in MS63 at $700 Canadian, MS64 at $1000 Canadian, and $1350 Canadian in MS65. I don't see any values for that coin in Proof Like condition. I think you should have that coin graded by a professional grading service like ICCS, or PCGS.
I don't know whether that ring was put around the coin at the mint or after it left the mint, but from what I can see it appears to be a high mint state example. I agree with gawd0wns in that you may have a very special coin in your possession.
Can you post larger images of both sides of this coin? The coin itself should be a regular MS issue from the Canadian the mint. But the holder is probably rare. This is the first one I have seen for a 1908 10c coin. I have seen about 4 or 5 so far for the 1908 1c coin - which is either gold plated or coated in gold paint. Nice one.
THANX for the info. I checked out the above site and right below the cent was a 'blue enamel cent' - no pictures so I can't compare. Mine does not appear to be a key ring - just surrounded - also it's sterling and not plated.
