I found a Lincon penny year 1977 that has been stamped with/in a 1990 dime stamp front and reverse. Could you please tell me if this would be worth anything.

This would have had to be done after leaving the U.S. Mint as there is NO WAY both dates would have been available at the same time for such an error. None the less it would be great if you could post a photo so all the error collectors here could have a look and give far better advice than I!

as there is NO WAY both dates would have been available at the same time for such an error.---- Wrong...there is such as thing as a dule dated error...and there is an error of a cent planchet with a dime on one side......I agree..this sounds like more than likely its not real but check out this photo. http://byersnc.com/inventory/dimeoncentcapm.jpgI think that is the only way a dime can be struck on a cent planchet...only by someone doing it by hand at the mint...or maybe a die cap like this one.... I would say from what this member said above about his coin that it is fake...I just wanted to add alittle info for you ;) Speedy

Speedy, I only see one date in that pic. I don't think there's any way that coin could be a real mint error. 1977 and 1990? 13 years apart?

13 years apart is an impossibility, in fact one year apart is also considered to be an impossibility,,
The capped die that speedy showed is an example of a coin struck on a wrong planchet not a Duel date or even a mule,a mule would require both denoms being struck.
The coin described is without a doubt a post mint hoax coin.

Bobby The photo was to show a dime struck on a cent planchet... I didn't post a duel dated cent...but it does happen.
Rick I agree 13 years apart is almost impossibility and most that are known are 1 years apart. That wasn't the point I was trying to make... The poster asked a question...he was told it could happen...what I was pointing out was that it could happen even though the chance is small....in fact slim. The photo I posted was a cent planchet with a dime on it...that is what the poster seemed to say was his coin...a duel dated cent in some else...I didn't post that photo...but if you want I can try and find one.

are you thinking of overdates ? these would not IMO be duel date coins !!
The 1942 over 1 Merc is an example of an overdate .

Nope--this is not an overdate...you would be able to see both dates...the coin was struck twice. I've been trying to learn more about errors lately and have joined a e-list with some of the top names in the error business....Byers/Weinberg and more...that is where I first heard of this error. Now I would agree from the post above that more than likely this coin in this thread is fake...but I wanted to post that it could happen therefor not to let someone just get a wrong idea.

Hi Speedy! Thanks for the link. That is an amazing error. How in heavens name does something like this happen? Is it done on purpose? I can understand during a transition from year to year, but 13 years apart? Mike

Hey Mike As I'm just getting into Errors I could be total wrong but I think there are a few ways it could happen.
#1...it could have been "helpped" into the dies... #2...it could have gotten stuck in one of the Bins that holds the blanks...then 13 years latter after being pounded with blanks for years got un-stuck and was then struck again. #3...sometimes its a cent with a quarter struck next or the like...sometimes they changes the bins that are used for blanks if I understand it right...a struck cent could have been in one and it didn't come out when they were putting them in bags for the FED's....then the Blank quarters were put in there and then into the dies.....
I can't say....I don't think anyone can say for sure...but its there...its real....its an error :)

sorry about not responding back quickly. the dime image is backwards on both sides and is not raised on the coin.
