As some of you know, I am hunting for a nice certified problem free $3 gold coin(ANACS, NGC, or PCGS). My current budget is $1000 as of right now(I know this limits my purchase for this particular coin). This budget may go up somewhat in the next few months, but not by too much as I am going to be getting married soon.

Anyways, I have been searching for a quality piece that have better eye appeal/detail than the official grade states. Here is an NGC VF-25 example that appears to have strong details compared to others I've seen in the same grade range. Opinions?

I think it's a little expensive for the grade, but if you like it, go for it. But I'd encourage you to get a much lower mintage date, as coins with a mintage of only a few thousand can only run you 1000 or a little higher.

Learning from my own experiences, I would recommend visiting a trusted dealer or show with a selection of a candidate coins to choose from. There's nothing like seeing a coin like that in person before you buy--and later feeling you made a good choice from many options. Just my .02--good luck in your hunt!

Kurt is right on target with his comment. I like to hold, and view my stuff before I buy it- it's got to have "the energy" that just feels right before I plank down some fed script.
But that's a great coin to have in your collection!

Yeah, I hear you guys. I live in the middle of nowhere, so it is really hard to go anywhere and purchase these coins. The closest dealership is an hour away, and he doesn't carry this kind of stuff.

Here are a couple of raw $3 gold coins on ebay that look funny to me. Raised bumps/lines, etc. Of course, I may just be paranoid.

Look at that raised bump between "S" and "T" on the obverse of this one.

The reverse is chalk full of "raised lines", not including the scratch that the seller mentions. Die cracks? hmmmmmm
