Hi, everyone! Thanks for all the comments from my previous coin posts. Those comments encouraged me to read more books on varieties & errors. In the process of reading & hunting coins, I found a 1983 penny which I need help in determining about the possibilities of DDR/DDO in letterings/devices, the field looks like a matte finish seemed to be with "cloth weaves" mostly on obverse. Needs assistance if I am seeing right and if the penny is worth to be sent for grading. Thanks!

?Is it double moustache, what's at the neck & ribbon (cuds?), is a number '5' at the neck?

?This field area is where I noticed cloth weaves & front of face. The doubling at the sides of the building seems to be present in LIBERTY. Is it a doubling for LIBERTY, too?

?1983 has the doubling seen at the sides of the building. Is it a doubling for 1983, too? Silhouette of number '3' below '9' of 1983. Is it of significance?

?Desisgner's Initials seems weak & with die break ( Cuds at base of building)?

?DDR on

?DDR sides of building including in between levels, some pillars with doubling. What kind of doubling are these? Small Cuds on pillars?

slight doubling to the east?

Definite plating issue with the zinc zit bubbles, same with wavy look. poor adhesion of plate. Pix blurry to tell about doubling.

Thanks, Crazyb0. I will read again your recommended PDFs. My apologies for the poor capture of specimens. I bought the cheapest microscope I can find for my educational enhancement. I might be upgrading soon. Is plating part of the die process or strike process?

The cent planchets are plated before they go to the mint to become coins.

Hi,cwb. Thanks for your response. I am just trying to recall info that I have read. Are you referring to the whole sheet where planchets are punched out or ready-made pre-purchased planchets from outside sources or can be both? Please correct me if I am wrong. I think I might have missed this information when I read the books I purchased. I got stuck with PDS which was referred from the book as planchets-dies-strikes. Don't get me wrong. This acronym has helped me remember some information. I might have not retained info on plating. With the info you provided, since the plating occurred as part of the planchet process, the dies and the strikes have not contributed to the condition of the coin? Hence, the coin is at its face value since real value of coins occur during the die process?

For the cents, the mint doesn't make it's own planchets. They are brought in. They are plated after being punched out, otherwise the edge would not be plated.
They are put through a machine called an upsetter that rolls the raised rim on them, then they are struck with the dies that make them coins.
To me, P,D,S means Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, the US cities where the mints are located that mint the money we use.
The cent is the only US coin that is plated. It has a Zinc core plated with Copper. It has been this way since 1982, before that, they were made of 95% Copper.
