I phoned PayPal this morning to report a suspicious e-mail, and make sure the charges were not real. I failed when asked to identify the account holder! I thought it was me. My password, e-mail, credit card, mailing address, all of it mine...except the first and last name. 15 years, no problem. They had the account holder as my ex-wife. So because it was my e-mail problem they listened and walked me through cancelling the old account and opening up a new one. I'm glad I got this straight, as if I had of had a dispute over a coin I got off of e-bay, PayPal would not have recognized me as the account holder. This means e-bay would not recognize it either, and I would of been out of luck. Oh...just something that slipped through the cracks 10 years ago. Who knows what else I forgot. I want to laugh, but I guess it can happen to any of us who were fool enough to get married. Glad you got it all sorted out though.

I fail to see what the "takeaway lesson" is from this?

The takeaway is to review your accounts (not just PayPal) from time to time and make sure all of your personal information is up to date.

There is another take away, but I fear it might lead to one more locked thread. Choose wisely Grasshopper.

My problem is they still have my account with my old email address, and there's no way to change that. So any news, announcements, updates, payment notices, or any other information is all sent to a nonexistent email account.

I *think* if you only have one email with them it can't be (or is difficult to) changed.
I think you have to add the new email, switch it to primary, then delete the old one.
