Well, I played hookie today and drove to Long Beach Coin Show in Los Angeles, California.

It was chilly this morning, around 55 degrees so I decided to drive South to Long Beach where it was sunny 60+ degrees.

Upon arrival, I parked outside and entered the show around 11am. There were quiet a bit of people dealing and wheeling. I saw relatively young person whips out two coins from PCGS box and consign two Seated coins (dollar and half) for $13,000 and $8000. I'm sure MikeF would have been happy to see these coins.

My main hunt for this trip was also Seated dollars, both motto and no motto versions.

After visiting 20+ booths, I found few slabbed Seated dollars, but all were way out of my price range. Most of the raw coins were cleaned, harshly cleaned, brushed, or damaged. (although some toned back to less than ugly state)

I guess I'm still lookin~~

Oh, I found a vendor who was selling some gold nuggets.. Looks great. Check out the pictures below..

I can empathize here.

Sorry you couldn't score any good deals. I didn't do so well on the Long Beach coin auctions on the internet, either. I found plenty of possibles but got overbid on every single one. What's up with that? Must be the big convention premium.

I noticed that Long Beach is not the place to find deals. There will be lots of vendors and will probably have what you are looking for, but prices seem pretty high.

I only picked up Bust and Barber quarters to upgrade my 7070 album.

Thanks for the report. I haven't had any luck buying Seated dollars at shows.
They are really broken into two categories. Those with original surfaces and those without. Many of altered coins will still grade straight. So when you find a graded example at a show with original surfaces it's not uncommon for dealers to list them 20%-30% over the already inflated RedBook price.
The last choice coin I saw at a show was a common 60-o in 53 and I think the dealer was asking $1,400 for it and it wasn't even beaned!
You will have a better chance of getting lucky at auctions. But if the coin has eye appeal in addition to original surfaces then you will still most likely pay 20%-30% over RedBook.

It's not an easy series to collect, but when you score a high quality coin, it makes the experience much more enjoyable. Very frustrating but highly rewarding series to pursue.
