I found a black nickel in circulation and curiously gave it a a second look and noticed it was a 1997 S Proof. I saw a thread on the forum a while back about black nickels and was wondering if this is post mint damage, or a natural occurrence to the metal due to exposure or metal quality.

It is not a "Black Beauty" nickel.

So I guess that would be my next question. What is a black beauty? I saw one post with images but didnt see an explanation of what causes it.

You're in luck! I happened to have created this topic a while back:

http://goccf.com/t/288744

You will find many genuine BBs posted and some imitators. One thing to note is that your nickel is showing the original silvery color on the high points that have been worn down. A black beauty is the same color all the way through and will not change with wear like that.

This needs to be in a separate post. I just discovered some strange coincidence. I made my guess for your contest, Mayflower2020, before replying here. Now, check out the date and time of the beginning of the BB topic:

The month and day is the same as my contest guess, the time (which was actually 11:34 PM for me) is one minute off. Also, Black Beauty nickels do have a bluish tint at the right angle.

Whoa... weird...
I had to read this twice. At first I thought you were saying you picked that date and time because of your nickel post, it's not. That is a funny coincidence.

Yeah, I thought it slightly weird. My contest guesses were actually based on my own birth date and time.
