I have been looking at hundreds, if not more than thousand Seated Liberty halves & dollars in last year or so. It seems like Seated series are graded more strictly than Bust halves by TPGs, especially giving "details" grade. Am I imaging things? Or, is there some leniency toward Bust halves, since so many high grade coins are available. What are your thoughts?

They were manufactured differently so yes Seated coins do have a higher standard just as ultra moderns have a higher standard than Seated coins

Bust halves are notorious for having strike issues. They are really tuff to grade. You need a book with pictures that explains the nuances of each year. That's why grading on this forum and others are so inaccurate for this series. You can't compare a 23 to a 32 to come to an accurate grading conclusion. Grading vf-xf specimens are particularly difficult.

Bust coinage seems to get a pass on cleanings from TPGs.

Quote: Bust coinage seems to get a pass on cleanings from TPGs. I would agree with this up to a point. Harshly cleaned, whizzed, overly dipped, or polished coins will not be overlooked, even by the lesser TPGs. I read once that it was estimated some 60% of all bust halves had been cleaned. That's probably an exaggeration but, sure, TPGs don't want to be detailing every single one that looks a little too clean. Don't know as much about SL coins.

I spent an enormous amount of time with Heritage for their halves offerings that closed yesterday.
The one absolute conclusion is that PCGS is SO much looser on grading than Is NGC that its just silly on the BFD.

Quote: The one absolute conclusion is that PCGS is SO much looser on grading than Is NGC that its just silly on the BFD. They're not at all and you're basing that off of pictures. I know some NGC fans have been trying to push this lately on various forums but anyone who uses PCGS knows that simply isn't the case. I'm not even sure what you were looking at but unless someone is a bust half specialist a lot of coins look overgraded even though they aren't because of striking issues. Overall and especially on the high end PCGS rewards luster and eye appeal a little more than NGC and is quicker to ding an ugly coin even if it's technically strong. NGC is more likely to reward technical strength and not penalize ugly coins. To say that one is "SO much looser" than the other is just personal bias

Thanks for the comments.
My main thought was that many of the Bust halves seem to have been cleaned at once but were graded straight, whereas Standing Liberty Dollars/Halves in same condition seem to have details designation.

I agree. Happens over and over. No apparent explanation for it. You have to build this into your evaluation process.
