Good day. I am new to this forum and indeed coin collection. I recently found on ebay a silver Queen Caroline coronation medal. It is from 1727 bares the signature of John Croker who I understand was the man who cast the coin. The condition seems to be very very good for its age.. does anybody know about this coin and a decent price that I should buy to add to my small collection. I couldn't see in the terms and conditions if I can post copy images so I have included the item number. Any advice would be appreciated. It ends tomorrow is currently £80 reserve not met. Cheers Matt

Looks counterfeit to me.
I would stay away from it.

The portrait on the item for sale is not exactly like the portrait on the genuine Croker coronation medallion so I can only conclude that it's not the genuine Croker coronation medallion.

Some of the details, eg, the middle face on the reverse are indistinct, and the veil on the left hand figure looks different to the genuine Croker coronation medallion.

However, I'm wondering whether it's been created from a cast of the original with retooling or whether it's a contemporary counterfeit - both seem unlikely.

I wouldn't risk GBP89 on it, though.

Thanks to everybody for your comments. Would the silver coin be different to the copper one which has been commented on as they are obviously from different metals? Thanks for all of your help.

Hello again, I forgot to say I had been researching and the copper and silver medals do seem to differ. Looked at several online side by side and the silver one does look like all the other silver ones but not like the copper. Being new to this I don't know how to add pictures. Cheers m

I've just seen this on ebay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/38238765...keTrack=true

It's described as George II Official Silver Coronation Medallion 1727 By J. Croker but I suspect it's cast.

I found an NGC certified example of the silver medal https://coins.www.collectors-societ...px?sc=239261

Another example of the silver medal https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/...:John_Croker scroll down and the obverse and reverse photos are in the first row, second and third images.

https://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?...4&lot=747904 Baldwins sold one of these medals in 2013 for 160 GBP

That's all in the information I've found. I will not weigh in on whether the example asked about in the original post is authentic or fake since it is not an area I am knowledgeable about.

OP's coin has the distinctive look (whitish metal color, pitting on the surfaces) of many of the modern cast copies coming from Russia and China. Seller has 17 feedback and only been on ebay for two months. The striking weakness is also of immediate concern, as these medals were struck with extremely fine detail under high pressure, and did not acquire wear beyond cabinet rub because they did not circulate. It's almost certainly not an original medal and probably not even silver. Based on seller's other listings/sales he or she may be liquidating an estate or acquired collection of coronation-related memorabilia, and may not be aware that the listed medals are not original.

If you are willing to throw your money at it, I would recommend starting with the weight and diameter, and going from there, including magnet/ring tests, and if it passes all of those, send it off for authentication or have it tested via XRF to confirm its metallic composition.
