Found this 1974 cent with seems like a very thick 9. What are your thoughts.
Thanks in advance.

1974 was a fabulous year for die changes and variety. There is the fat ones, skinny, and medium dies. Throw in the last year for S mintmark and you have a bonanza. Your example has the thickness of date common on this variety and is hard to discern if it is a DDO. VarietyVista does list some DDO's for 1974 so don't chuck your coin yet, check the listings and look for die markers. I went through 10 unopened old bank rolls. of 74's from the 1st National bank or Portland and mixed in were 5-10% Sanfrans. As I studied the coins I noticed 4 distinct dies and spent time researching. Found out mint director ordered all Sanfrans minted for circulation in 1974 be shipped and mixed with D and P coins to discourage hoarding. This is probably why 1974 S cents have a high premium in MS66 and above as the coins obviously took a beating. Your example may be a DDO but I can't be sure, you will have to dig into the matter. I kept all my 74's and continually go back to them in an attempt to figure them out. I too have some with almost comical thickness but since I found so many it probably is from a master die.

Jay42 ditto. After my dissertation on the year 1974 I failed to mention Large Date...duh. Thanks from me too. Good call.

Thanks CAM. I did look at VV first and notice both were "thin date" that they listed. Might take a close look and see if I can notice any doubling on anything. Probably keep it anyways

Looks like the large date for that year. Not a doubled die.
