(Mexican guitars strumming quickly) This is a sad tale, you tell, Johnny54321. Unrequited love, even that given by a counterfeit $3 Princess, is something from which the heart seldom completely heals. (background singers, 'ah yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, YIIIIII). But don't give up Johnny. Realize that $3 princesses are a dime a dozen, especially the counterfeit kind, and move on with your search for your ultimate coinmate. She is lurking in the shadows even now, Johnny54321. Don't go to the man! Don't go to the man! I mean, that unreliable Abe you have in your hands now. Oh, he is very handsome and rare, but you just don't know about him, do you? (background choir: "He don't know about the man!"). He is tricking you. Yes, tricking you away from your final destiny. Your destiny is to be in possession of the most powerful of coins, Johnny54321. Look with your heart (background "Look with your heart, johnny5432-ooooonnnnnneee). You will win this race after all, and your soul will find peace at last when you discover this coin above coins.
Rest in Peace

lol. Now you're losing me mfry. Were'nt you the one who told me last post to not abandoned abe so easily? I'm the first one to admit that I'd love to have the ultimate of coins(whatever that is). My pocketbook is a limiting factor. However, mfry, you seem pretty passionate for my cause, so I'm more than willing to accept donations!! :-D

I still havent sent the coin back, but most likely will at this point. I'm going to try to contact NGC and see what they say tommorow, but will most likely be sending him back. I'm pretty sure what I'm seeing is PVC.

So I sent Abe back. I was sad to see him go. Under larger magnification, I could see other areas of green debri; so I think that I made the right decision with a return. It looks like the stuff would come off easily with acetone, and part of me REALLY wanted to try; but it is just to risky for a 1K + coin. My hands would probably shake so much I'd end up dropping it down the sink or something....lol.

Ay, now the post-S-VDB Lincoln depression sets in. I think you made the right move, but I hope I didn't steer you in the wrong direction. But whenever in doubt, do send it back - esp. with a coin of that magnitude. Do you realize that you would have been paying 100,000 times it's face value! That's one zero away from being a million to one! I know you want that particular species of coin. I'm thinking you're about 19 or 20, am I correct? I know you're looking for a lasting investment, but that particular coin that you had - it wasn't right for you. He didn't deserve you. I would continue the quest if you have the heart, or search for something else like that, which you also will prize. I got carried away in the wheat-back cent thing, then I was going to buy this 1931-S for $135, I put some money down. Then I thought and thought about it, and I thought, why do I want to pay over $100 for a single penny!! The dealer was driving me crazy. It wasn't pretty but he said it was uncirculated. I almost was persuaded! But now, as I look back, I'm glad I didn't go ahead with it. Why? I don't know, just gut feeling, I guess. Same as you had, I think. Something wasn't quite right, and you decided to go another road. Call it coin-intuition. It's good to have.

Well, this seller impressed me. He gave me a full refund, plus the original shipping and handling costs I paid for receiving the coin. I explained everything to him about the coin that concerned me, and he was super-cool about it. It seems some sellers on ebay really do care about the buyers best interests.

Thanks for the encouragement MFRY. Yeah, you have to learn to trust your gut about things. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Sinking a thousand dollars into a penny is kind of a weird feeling, but now I want another one! sheesh, these coins have a lot of power over me. Actually I'm 27 years old, so you were only a few years off.

You are welcome johnny54321. I'm not saying don't try to get a 1909S VDB, but just not that one. There will be another come your way someday. Hold it in your hand before you decide to purchase. Look at with with a magnifying glass. Know the grade and the approximate value, and I know you will do OK. I think this coin is a little overvalued right now, but maybe I'm wrong. I think it will go up next year, but after that, who knows? Boy, I could buy a lot of nice, graded coins for $1,000. And about that Princess you were telling me about and showed me the picture of her. (Just between us): She's not that good looking johnny54321. She's kind of a dog, too. What! you say? I know, I know, but for anything over $100 I want a pretty coin, with lots of character. Why, you can hardly make out her face! Ay, and the figure, Johnny, she has no figure! I can be so mean, like Simon on American Idol. But it's the truth, Johnny. It's the truth! Always listen to the truth, and don't let anyone tickle your ears with flattering remarks. I wouldn't touch that princess with a $250 pole, let alone a $300 one. My Red Book says that coin is $850 in very fine condition, but that one you showed me is in Almost-Good condition, or stretching it to Good. So the price of $300 may be about right, but she's so ugly, Johnny. So what would I do if I wanted a gold piece? I would get an 1908D Indian Head half eagle at AU55 for $400. They had a mintage of 148,000. That's $100 more than you would pay for this (supposed) princess. I say she is no good for you Johnny, no darn good!

I shouldn't be giving you advise at all Johnny. Just take my last comment as an example of what IMHO I think you should spend your money on. Get as much kick for the buck as you can. Get the lowest mintage and the highest grade of whatever. I think you did that with the 1909S VDB, but $1000 coins shouldn't have any problems whatsoever, IMHO. These are just suggestions, please, I'm no expert. I just wanted to help. I'm sorry if I confused you or led you astray. I should probably shut up and let the experts here speak. Thanks for allowing me to answer your question in my way. Others will have different things to say, I'm sure.

Nothing wrong with your advice. I was honestly kidding about purchasing the princess in the link. You are right, it is an absolute dog, but that is what is intriguing about it. The $3 gold series were unpopular in circulation from the get-go, so to see one that is TRULY that worn, is very very rare. The vast majority of them are XF and above. The seller states that the coin in FA-2 condition has a POP report of 1(which I completely believe), so it is actually more rare than the high-grade princesses from a certain standpoint. It just makes me wonder how it found itself in such extensive circulation. Or maybe it was artificially circulated, who knows. But no, I have no interest in buying it.

(guitars strumming) One night long ago I entered a bar just south of the border. The moon was as big and bright as a New Oklahoma Quarter. I had change in my pocket, and I knew anything could happen that night. After sipping some tequila I felt kinda queasy, and I knew that it was time for me to go (Chorus: time for him to go!). But in walked a lady, who sat down beside me, and asked me to buy her a round (a round!). Oh she was quite rare, so rare in this world, no one has seen such a sight such as her! (a sight!). I wouldn't say ugly, but I couldn't say pretty, no I couldn't say that all night! (all night!). She had definitely been around, all over town, and her dentricles were faded for sure. (for sure!). But I didn't care, I was lost in the fog of that tequila golden night. I held her tight, as tight as a last dollar, and didn't really mind her strong overbite. (her overbite!). But when I awoke, in a room filled with smoke, and I saw the seated liberty across that cheap room. I realized right there, that what I needed was some air, so I ran til my feet started to bleed. (to bleed!). I tell you this story, Johnny54321, because you are flirting with one such as this. In the boisterous evening she may seem quite appealing, and almost too hard to ignore, but she will take all your money, stick around until dead Monday, and never budge an inch from the couch. Regret will set in, like a cardinal sin, and then you will finally see the light! (the light!)
