I thought I would go through some of my S mintmarked LMC's and found this 1970 S LMC that looked completely different from the rest. I don't believe this is from circulation damage nor is it an RPM. Insight needed please.

Since mintmarks are hand-added at the last step of producing the working dies, of which there are many, placement and different puncheons used, the size, shape and placement can differ. realize each die only produces 100k or so coins before retirement of the BILLIONS minted, just how many working dies are used?

@Crazyb0, that is true. I am adding another photo for you all to look at. The difference is pretty drastic.

Jim, let me introduce you into the field of Repunched Mintmarks, aka RPMs. Because of the hand punching, a slight movement or turning on a second tap to set the mark may cause the RPM. Your first coin is such an animal. Note the shape, location of the mark as compared to the reference coin. now lokk at two other RPMs of the same date. see the different locations and shapes?

Your second coin is just a normal coin, no RPM but placement is different too.

Note it is CLOSE, but not EXACT. The die technician is used to placing mintmarks and gets them close from die to die, but never the exact same place. That only happens in horse shoes and hand-grenades.

Thank you Crazyb0 for the insight. I guess maybe I didn't ask the question correctly. My question was about the one you are calling normal. It appears as if that mintmark is completely different than the RPM you pointed out. The shape is completely different it doesn't appear as the "Tall" mintmark on the RPM. It is thicker and the bottom of the S appears to be tighter than the bottom of the normal mintmark for that year. It looks more like the MMS-007.

Jim, wish I knew more, where to find direct info on dies/puncheons used per year, and if used by which mint (most were all placed in Philly and shipped out, changed later). Even which die pairs can be found out, but not my area.

I appreciate you helping me navigate a new field. Heck, they are all new to me! And, for informing me about my RPM

Same punch. Just punched into the die differently. If there was a spread, then it would be a RPM. But there is no spread. But slightly punched differently. Only one style punch used that year.

Sure looks different, but must have been flattened in circulation to appear wider.
