Hi all, I got this coin from ebay today, but somehow not feeling it's genuine from the look and the feel in my hand. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

A very poor fake. Ask before buying. Sorry for that.

Kind of looks like a Dryer Coin, but I don't believe they had clothes dryers back then.

The only thing that I can see might be an issue is the color, but that may very well just be an artifact of the lighting when the pictures were taken. Better pictures would be necessary for conclusive determination, but I wouldn't dismiss this one immediately. Here's one from my own collection. All the design details seem to match up. Also, one thing that all 1851 Half Cents have in common is the presence of the base of an extra "1" digit immediately to the right of the date. Your pictures are not high enough resolution for me to be able to tell whether or not this feature is there, but if it is, then it's most likely legit.

A poor-quality fake struck from transfer dies. The rims are a dead giveaway, as well as the odd mushiness of parts of the design and the unlikely color. The original 1851 posted has much sharper and more detailed design elements. The Half Cents of 1851 used only one die pair and the dies were retired long before a true LDS or VLDS example could be struck (Manley only lists one die state.)

That would explain why the design elements are all in the right places. Comparison of design features with pictures of genuine examples is often sufficient to detect the cheap Chinese copies that can be bought for a dollar. But I guess in this case, the weakness of the hair around the ear is a more telling sign of the forgery, particularly when compared with the strength of the word "LIBERTY". This would indicate a strike from poor-quality dies, rather than legitimate wear.

Thanks everybody. The more I look at it, the more I am convinced it's a counterfeit.

Interesting that you had no objective evidence telling you it's a fake, but you just had a feeling about it. That usually is the best gauge!
