My friend came to me the other day asking me to evaluate his coin collection. He mentioned that years ago, he found this 1916 D Mercury dime in circulation. Is it real? It does have 2 bad rim bumps.

That "D" is more or less the right shape, but otherwise is rather "funky" for want of a better term. The blob on it might be from a botched soldering job.

I just cleaned the area around the mintmark with acetone. The mintmark did not fall off, and the black gunk on the MM cleaned off.

Looks real to me. A bit worn but then after over 100 years, got to be expected.

@coin197, any chance of an updated pic of the mintmark? That said, with this amount of info available, it seems like this would be a good candidate for slabbing.

Yes, I will take some new pictures today. I'm taking it to a coin dealer today. I will tell you the outcome! This would be the find of a lifetime for most people!

Could be an unusual find. Strange that the coin is not quite round with the two flat edges.

A nice find! It has the appearance of a legitimate 1916-D Mercury dime. Send it to PCGS or NGC for authentication.

It is not round because of two rim dents. This coin was found in the late 1960s, so it is less likely to be counterfeit right?

Coins been counterfeit for ages, but this one seem okay. It's in die-1 position, but like all said, it needs to be authenticated. I like the detail, but not sure how the TPG will look at the rims?

Probably will get a Details grade, but valuable nonetheless.

I was ready to scream hoax, but when you said it was found in the 60s I hesitated. I found plenty of Merc dimes in circulation in the 60s, including a 1921....so it's possible. Btw, it looks real. Send it in.

The mm looks a little suspicious to me. Since there's still a full rim on the rev, it wouldn't explain the mm being worn down. It's possible there was a die lump during minting, not sure how likely that is. The fact that the coin is low grade with a large obv scratch and rim problems makes the likelihood of someone adding a mm to it implausible.
I'd do what you're doing. Take it to a lcs. Let us know what they say.

That's a good idea, though it looks good to me. Given the scratches and rim problems, I'm thinking a details grade in any event.
