So I went to the post office this afternoon to pick up my '08 special edition silver dollar and noticed that they had the 2003 Hologram Maple Leaf box set (5 coins) on sale for $75+ tax.
Seemed like a good deal to me (regular price was $149+ tax), so I picked one up. Too bad they only had one set left or I would have bought a second or maybe even a third set.

Canadian NCLT has a tendency to lose half its value. Be glad you didn't pay full price when they came out.

chrycopaul,
Absolutely, for most of them. During Danielle Wetherup's mandate, and particularly near the end (...), I wrote several articles and editorials against the proliferation of irrelevant NCLT (Non Circulating Legal Tender) collector coins.
Despite Dingwall's effort to restrain mintage and to melt unsold inventories NCLT coins for the most part today are still a very bad investment. However, the quality, artistry and uniqueness of those coins have increased tremendously.

My guess is that much of the RCM's NCLT issues since the 1990's have their origination in the coins sold to tourists in the Caribbean. The RCM made many of the low mintage issues sold starting in the 1970's, such as issues made for Turks and Caicos Islands. Presumably, the RCM decided to go into the business of selling "tourist" type coins themselves, and cut out the "middle man". The result is what there is today. But it appears this business is fading now as they have over produced this material, and new economic realities are adding to the decline in interest for them.

So in the end, what's the consensus, was it a good or bad buy at $75+ tax?

Thanks for the link Marc, I'm going to keep an eye on that one to see where it ends. Most of my collection is comprised of Proof and BU silver dollars and RCM DD proof sets, but I do have 6 SML's including the '98 10oz 10th Anniversary SML, so this set will be a nice addition. Unfortunately like many collectors, I think if I were to ever sit down and compare the silver content to what I've spent, I'd shoot myself for ever getting into this hobby...........LOL Thanks again, Steve

Hey Marc
Even if you live in Arizona my friend I'm sure that most of Canadian here in the forum would give you info on some of those Post Office Special.

Thanks Andre, I do have my contacts... hehehe... no seriously I still have good friends in Canada who bought coins for me (such as the 2010 Olympic coins) but as you know sometimes you just need to be there so you can inspect the coins before buying. Speaking of the 2010 olympic coins, after complaints, complaints and pressure and more complaints the RCM finally agreed to ship the 2010 coins to my US address. Before I had to ship in Canada, have the coins forwarded here. So stupid. Marc

In case anyone was interested, the '03 SML Hologram set in the e-Bay listing mentioned a few messages higher up in this thread sold for $73.11 US + $8.11 for shipping.
The only unknown is the duty charges (if any) as that seems to be a hit and miss charge depending on how the item is shipped and what's recorded for total value.

So $75 was a fair price after all. Marc

Interersting, I went the post office yesterday and they were also selling some of last years product (2007) at 50% off. Is there a particular time period where this occurs that anyone has noticed, such that in the future I will pay more attention and go stock up on bargains?

Hi Timotay, it may just be a matter of what stock each individual post office has at the time, but I know I'll be checking the display at the one I frequent more closely from now on.
