Well, while I still would like the eagle back, I have to admit that all the different reverses have made it more interesting to check my change and to buy folders wherein I put said change.

The pretty one? You mean the Standing Liberty? Or the Capped Bust?

Hmmm - I kind of like the State & ATB Quarters - but I'm easily swayed and can take them either way. Btw, I had to go back and read your post again after reading the other responses - I didn't see the space between quarter & back at first, and I thought you were referring to Tony Romo.

Quote: Do all the changes make people start collecting quarters or turn collectors off? Consider this, I bought my 1932-D and 1932-S quarters in 1997. They would cost me at least three times as much today. If the large price jump is from increased demand, then I say the programs brought people in.

I like the Eagle quarter reverse of 1932 - 1998, but I must admit that on my first few visits to the States I got rather bored with quarters in change, as they all had the same design and I never saw any older than 1965. Fast forward to 2005, and I was touring your beautiful National Parks, and it was such fun trying to get all the State Quarters. I don't like all the designs of the State Quarters - some are a bit fussy and overcrowded - but I love the medallic style of the ATB Quarters (except possibly the Effigy Mounds one with those strange cadavers...)

I think a new master die, with much more sharply defined breast and wing feathers would make the definitive Quarter look pretty, just like a sharply struck Morgan looks pretty.
Same applies to Washington's hair.
Currently, a Quarter struck with worn dies is a rather dull looking coin.

The quarterbacks I have seen on TV are not pretty, and most are mean lookin' critters! They have to be, to survive.

I agree the proof original Washington quarter reverse design is beautiful and classic, but I like this too:

The coin designs today are more like pictures than designs. The mint doesn't like making high relief coins anymore so they use designs that are flat. I don't think they could manage to bring back the old eagle while keeping flat without making it look ugly, so they probably won't bring it back.

It's not that they don't like to make high relief coins, it's that they CAN'T. When you strike a coin it takes time for the metal to flow into all the recesses of the die. To give it that time you either apply the pressure longer or you strike it harder. But there is a limit to how hard you can strike it, things in the press start breaking.Back when the Eagle reverse was being made the presses struck between one and two coins per second. The metal had time to flow. Today they strike 13 coins per second. The metal has less than 1/6th the amount of time to flow, so naturally it can't flow as far. So the relief HAS to be much lower. You could go back to the higher relief and slow the press down, but to make the same number of coins you would need thirteen times the number of presses they use now, which means thirteen times as much space. That's not going to happen.

Personally, I like the State Quarters. I'm sure that many people have joined the hobby because of them.

I like the State Quarter and ATB designs. Probably because there are 5 different designs every year. Not boring at all. But the liberty designs are better yet. Nix the dead presidents on all coins.
