Does this look like a small date to anyone else?

KurtS is the expert on these. I think he has about half the 70S small date cents that exist.

I can't tell them apart then. What am I looking for then. It looks like the nine is looping back into the date.

If you look really closely at the date you can see that the seven is a little lower than the other three numbers. This indicates a 1970-S large date. If it was a small date, then all four numbers in the date would appear perfectly level if you placed a tiny micro-ruler across the top of them.
Plus, theres the liberty. On the small date the "Liberty" is a very weak press. Not very deatailed or sharp, if you get what I mean. On the large date is a very crisp, sharp press.

on circulated cents, the first thing you should look at is LIBERTY. the L is strong on small dates, but the rest is weak, especially IBE. then, take a look at the date. the tops of 970 should be in a perfect straight line on small dates. on large dates, the 9 and 0 are higher than the 7. on proof cents, you have to just look at the date.

Littleboy, LOL...no expert here, but I can tell them apart now. Here's a very good diagnostic written by Coppercoins.

Nice diagnostic Kurt. I can't tell them apart when I have both in front of me. This will definitely help. nlp

How much is a 1970-S small date worth in like, an average circulated condition?

They're actually hard to find in circ condition, because I suspect many came from mint sets. A while back, I sold an RB MS60 for $15. I think that was a good price.

I finally got around to checking the set I bought and the small date is really a large. Back to the salt mines. nlp
