What do most people buy. Are there advantages from one to the other? I'm thinking of buying a couple through the US mint.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Why buy one when you can get two at twice the price? Seriously, with coins like that, I would get one of each - money permitting.

Choosing one over the other, I would choose the proof version due to the much lower mintage numbers.

Uncirculated versions are whats bought and sold as silver buillion. Proof SAE's are more intended on collections and the such.

Although, just because its a "proof" coin doesn't mean it has to be more appealing to you. I personally enjoy a nice MS coin just as much as a proof coin. They both have certain attributes that make them appealing.

If you want just the actual coin itself to put into your collection, then check out other websites that are going to sell them to you at most likely 2-3 dollars over silver spot price. If you want a coin with an official US mint case then thats what your paying for buying from the mint.

I have yet to get my eagle yet. Sadness.

The uncirculated W Eagles certainly sell for more than bullion and are specifically for collectors with much lower mintages(the first two years of W Eagles have had lower mintages than the proof)

If you just want a hunk of silver, buy a bullion Eagle from a dealer, the Mint does not directly sell them.

I just received my two Proofs and one Uncirculated 2008 SAE's from the U.S. Mint........and it's true....they "both" have interesting qualities and in my opinion can "both" belong in collections........
These are such beautiful coins in both versions.....get to the Mints website and get em' ordered I say !
I was only waiting, because I wanted several things on "one shipping and handling order".....instead of paying S&H on 6 or 7 different seperate orders thoughout the year.......Though I still have to wait for the 2008 Silver Proof Set to come out in late August.......had to have my Eagles !
I got P & D Sac's......
2008 P & D Kennedy rolls
2008 Proof Qtrs.
2008 Silver Proof Qtrs.
(2) Proof SAE's
(1) Uncirc. SAE
And the 2008 Presidential Proof Set......so that I can "crack" and put into an album at a later date.......however worthless these might be now and in the future, at least I'll have a "proof version album" of them!!....

Well, yeah, excluding those. I made the statement to kind of sub-divide the proof and uncirculated into buillion and collectors. But I thought you had to buy proof to get the 'W' mintmark on them. I didn't know there were uncirculated versions with the 'W' mintmark on them. Or were they like special cases or something?

I just bought my first SAE a couple hours ago. I went into the coinshop and found, to my surprise, 4 SAE's in the discount bucket for 17 dollars apiece. I was psyched and knew I couldn't pass that deal up. I only bought one though, but at least I finally have one now!

I didn't order mine from the mint I got them from a local dealer.
Got an uncirculated 08 ASE from the West Point Mint in the blue US Mint box. Not the fancy one with hinges that the proof coins come in, the cardboard one with the plastic insert to hold the coin.

I was told the W coins are slightly more collectible becuase they are minted for just that reason.. collecting.

I have put together a decent collection of uncirculated ASE's so far (86, 87, 88, 92, 05, 06, 07, 08, 08 with 07 Reverse) So far my only 'W' mint ASE is from 08

When did they start minting 'W' ASEs? Did it start ni 86?
Rest in Peace

Hi there mikep and welcome to the forum,

You really have to love those eagles! Whether you decide
on Proof or Uncirculated you will be pleased!

I've put together a couple of uncirculated roll issue sets, but
only have one of the proofs, a 2007W, which is very nice but seems
a bit lonely. I might have to find her a couple of friends with the
other mint marks, the early San Francisco minted proofs are still
reasonably priced, but the mid-years from Philadelphia are getting
a little pricey, I will have to wait for a deal on one of those!

The burnished series of 2006w-2008w, haven't really bothered
me enough yet to feel the desperate need to add them to the sets,
on the other hand the anniversary set is still a desired add.

Good luck and good colleicting to you

Thanks for all the input and welcomes! I'm thinking of buying one each, and see how it goes. These would be my first coins that I didn't get @ face value. I've never even seen a proof coin in person.

Go find a local coin shop, you'll get what you seek cheaper than from the mint. Mine takes these in all the time and sells them with mint packaging and all for just over melt.

Thad, if your shop is buying the 2006 W Uncirculated Eagles for a bit over melt, you need to clean them out because the 2006W is a $100 coin now with a mintage of 270,000 in the two Anniversary sets and 200,000 minted individually

Buy which one you like better, or both. Personally, I like the uncirculated better.
Rest in Peace

O.K. now the 2007W proof will no longer be lonely I received a coupon from eBay/PayPal from a recent disaster;

https://goccf.com/t/31089

I used it to adopt a couple of her sisters, 1986 S proof and a 2000 P proof!

Now that makes up a mint mark set unless they decide Denver needs to make some?!?!

photoeric21,

The first "W" minted ASE was in 1995 which was a poof coin with a mintage of 30,125 coins selling for around $5,000.00 a piece. From 2000 till current they have been minted with a "W" mint mark.

I think they are very beautiful coins. I have the following set in my collection.

1986 - 2008 Proof's
1986 - 2008 Uncirculated Set
2006 - 2008 Burnished
