What baffles me is when established coin sellers sell coins for significantly less than their worth over and over again due to an unwillingness to do their homework. One seller I used to buy from would routinely list small lots of world and ancient coins, but scared away casual bidders by not allowing a 99 cent no reserve auction from the start. Some were egregiously overpriced, but on more than a couple occasions I was able to buy the lot and flip a single coin for significantly more than the lot cost me. More than rare minor varieties or conditional rarities, these were rare emperors and rare types that anyone "in the biz" ought to identify. I'm under the impression that the grind gets to you sooner or later, and often the time investment it takes to go through every single coin you've got to handle in order to keep a business running is a very real issue as well.

With the price up in pm's lately, I've been able to score some gold below melt this past September.  1992 Columbus three piece for $328.70  1988 Olympic Proof for $254.70. Packaging nice and complete on both sets and like new on the 1988. Well worth the 10 days it took to arrive.  |

I recently picked up a 1729 Liard from Lorraine for $12.
It's not a terribly valuable coin, but it doesn't come up very often (I have only found one other example of this coin that has sold anywhere in the last 5 years, at an auction in France).
It fills a date hole in my OFEY series.

I collect a couple of pretty obscure places (Duchy of Lorraine, Duchy of Ferrara), and occasionally a moderately scarce coin will come up on ebay under-priced. I recently picked up this 1/2 Baiocco of Papal States - Ferrara for $28. An example I would rate a half grade better sold around the same time at a European auction for 110 euro (so, 5 times higher price taking into account the auction commission). Maybe not a fair comparison since the price of 18th c. coppers can go up pretty quickly with increasing grade, but I never would have paid over $100 to get this type. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces239260.html |

 Scored these for $8 a set. Melt is $13 and they sell for about $20 on ebay. They contain a shade over 1/2 oz per set.

Best score was an 1851 3 Cent Silver that came back in an NGC 64 holder for $33.
The pictures were awful, and for some reason the seller listed an empty whitman album as the focal point of the listing.

Nice little ebay silver score for $13 & $4.70 S/H. That's a little over 93 cents per coin! Who cares that it took the post office 10 days to get them here? At least they made it!  |

 (Sellers Photo) Nice little score of 45 silver quarters for $99.99. Best part is I didn't have any of these quarters yet....
