I picked up a VIP first strike Sacagawea dollar for just under $25 a couple of years ago. I have no idea what the value of this coin is in the marketplace but to me it was a bargain.

If I were the seller of that 1950 proof set and ran an auction starting at $9.95 and that's what it sold at, I would never list an auction on ebay again.

It was a Buy It Now listing!

Here are a couple more deals I got:

Sold 1885CC GSA Morgan for $735.55

Melt value was over $400.00 when I purchased. Missed the 1986 Liberty gold set listed shortly after because I was watching The Walking Dead.....

I was staying with my wife while she was in the hospital recovering from surgery. Needless to say...I had a TON of time to surf ebay. After a 7 hour "coin binge" I thought I might be hallucinating. Someone had posted a 2008 Burnished eagle (but the pictures were very clearly the 2008-w-rev-07). I asked the seller if this was indeed the picture of the coin. They confirmed and also mentioned they had 2 more coins JUST LIKE IT! I also asked if they knew it was an error coin..."Yep - I know it's a rare error - but I just want to sell my coins. You can buy all 3 if you want!?". SOLD
My wife is healthy and PCGS ended up grading all 3 of them as MS-70! Doesn't get much better!

That's excellent on all accounts, Bullyawn! I'll keep my eye out for those. Nice username, as well.

What kind of an idiot lists a 1950 proof set for $9.95 BIN? I'd be concerned its stolen or somebody's kid doing something they shouldn't.

The same kind of idiot who sells a group of random scruffy coins for $10.00 to a friend and later finds out one of them was a 1787 Connecticut copper. That was me, two years ago. (Not the proof set, just the old coins!) Luckily I sold the lot to a friend, who gave me the coin back. That coin piqued my interest and turned me into a collector.

I picked up a group of circulated Mercury dimes (13 of them I think) for about $20. One of them was a AG-G 1921.

Grabbed a pair of Liberty nickels for $16. One was a VF 1912D, the other an AU 1910.

RubyOpal hit the nail on the head!

The 1950 coins weren't listed as proof. I've bought a complete set of silver Washington quarters (including 32D&S in fine) for $50 less than melt. I've gotten both 21 & 21D Mercs for less than melt when I bought a Whitman album with coins. As shown in another post, I got my 14D VG8 & 31S VF20 for better than free when I flipped the set of coins I took them out of.

There are deals to be had......

What baffles me is when established coin sellers sell coins for significantly less than their worth over and over again due to an unwillingness to do their homework. One seller I used to buy from would routinely list small lots of world and ancient coins, but scared away casual bidders by not allowing a 99 cent no reserve auction from the start. Some were egregiously overpriced, but on more than a couple occasions I was able to buy the lot and flip a single coin for significantly more than the lot cost me. More than rare minor varieties or conditional rarities, these were rare emperors and rare types that anyone "in the biz" ought to identify.

I once bought a rather large group of pre 1960 Jefferson nickels for 7 cents each. I think there was about 3,000 in the group. I ended up with 9 rolls of silver nickels out of that group.

That describes my only score on ebay, a medieval silver coin from Lorraine bought from a large dealer. It was misattributed as a fairly common coin, when in fact it was from the reign of a duke who was on the throne less than a year, so all his coins are fairly rare. I think I paid about $40, but could sell it for maybe 5 times that. I don't scout around on ebay much, but maybe should do more.
