Again, I defer to those with more experience. The MM definitely has an extra vertical side. If machine doubled, I would expect the date to also show signs.

I know both RPMs and DDs exist for '53-D cents, but I do not yet know how to tell the difference.

That's a good one. Look up "Wexlers varieties" and you will find the RPM number.

Easy - Doubled Dies never effected the Mint Mark - RPM's affected the mint mark.

I just did a quick look on VV maybe rpm 001 fs-501? Stage E? Check markers could be wrong though
