Hey all, I just recently started searching through my piggy bank and a few coin rolls. I always ask for customer wrapped rolls and some of the tellers look at me like I am crazy. (That is a completely different topic)

Just beginning this is like being a kid in a candy store. Wanting to try every flavor.

I know it is important to look at a LOT of coins to begin to get a feel for what it is that you should look for and what is just ..other.

I have been setting aside all the DDO's and DDR's and rpm's and varieties and omm's for every year and then meticulously looking at them (sometimes too closely). I have discovered how to verify the die markers (if I can see them). And I have found some pretty neat stuff.

My question is (and I guess it is personal preference), how do you search rolls (I do Lincoln cents) and what do you look for? Specific dates, etc....

I know to look for certain dates like 1972, 2006, 1970, 1960, 1982 and so forth, but there are tons of different ones for each date. Do you search and look at all of them for every variety or just the most valuable, sought after, etc...

Thanks

I burnt out quickly on variety hunting and now only search for '98-00 WAMs, '92 CAMs, and varieties that could earn a small fortune, like an '82-D small date in copper or a Cheerios dollar.

I don't have time or space to roll hunt anymore, but still check the change!

I started about 4 months ago and have done about 60 boxes.
It did not take long to narrow down what I like.

What I like in order:

1. Halves- Silver, Proofs, NIFC including 1987.

2. Nickels. This was a surprise to me. I did not initially think I'd like Nickels, but they are fun for several reasons. You can find silver, buffalo's, V nickels, 2009's and also this is one type of coin you can make a complete set of through CRHing. (the Jefferson set)

3. Pennies. Wheats, 2009's and Indians.

4. Dimes. Silver, Mercs. I just edge search these now that the book is full.

The coins I do not care for are:
Quarters- I am just getting enough boxes to complete the sets. I've done about 4 boxes with no silver or older types. blah
Small Dollars- again just enough to complete the sets. I still need some newer ones and a couple Susan B's.

Have fun.

My advice is to do some research on the denominations that you plan to CRH. Create lists of varieties that you want to look for and this should help you figure an approach that will work for you. I originally created a list for LWCs/LMCs on the small post-its and stuck them adjacent to my lighted loop and microscope. I also created an 8.5x11 sorting template in word to bin items that were on my list for organizing later. Those post-its have been updated and expanded over the years. Some items came off but others got added. Create your sort...soon enough you'll memorize the bulk of it with each box searched. Good luck!
Rest in Peace

IMO dimes are the best, of course I'm a silver hunter, halves are just to slow. Barbers, Mercury dimes, and Roosevelts. I find lots of silver Canadian dimes here in the US also. One per $150, volume is key.

Roll hunting since 1977

I like briton's list and thoughts... though I'll add that 2009 dimes from both mints are hard to find and worth saving as well.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I just read that. That must have taken you quite some time to put together. On behalf of my self and my fellow newbies, "THANK YOU".
