This was one of the better coins from the Republican lot from Naumann
Vergilius, Gargilius and Ogulnius AR Denarius. 86 BC. Laureate head of Apollo right, thunderbolt below No legend or control letters, Jupiter in quadriga right, holding reins and hurling thunderbolt. Crawford 350A/2
Now here's the kicker... what's it struck on?
The wavy hair and eye are clear on the reverse, and I see at least three horse hooves poking out behind the obverse, plus an exergual line that erases half of the thunderbolt. I thought it was simply double struck at first, but the undertype portrait faces left. After searching, I can't find a good match for a left-face until sometime *after* 86 BC.
I will speculate that it is off the same dies and the moneyers were unhappy with the first strike, and over struck it a second time. speculatively, a deliberately double struck coin.
Looking at the coin again, the "undertype" head on the reverse does line up perfectly with the obverse portrait, but the remnants of the quadriga do not... I'm wondering now if this was some sort of really weird die clash?
