hate it too.. but sometimes it can't be helped.

For example, if you are collecting Mercury dimes, you would be pretty nuts these days to buy a 1916D unless it is slabbed since it has been so heavily forged and is even expensive in low grades.. why take the chance..

Good point. For what it is worth, I have never seen one offered raw; that is, looking at coin shows.

Here in Britain slabbed coins are still pretty unusual - even very rare and valuable coins are normally sold raw.
