So I stared collecting about a year ago (read my bio from another post) and I am thinking about getting a box of pennies. I normally don't coin roll hunt, I mostly but my coins from shows, shops or the mint. I would like to knkw how much I should pay for my first box of pennies to start out with? My main goal for the coin roll hunt is just to try it out. I would like to see what I find and just take the rest of it back to the bank. Please help. I'm new to coin roll hunting.

I roll hunted cents and nickels quite a bit for a few years. Haven't bought a box in over 4 years, but I have a few pieces of advice to pass on:

1: If you can't buy at face, don't roll hunt! Your total finds 99.95% of the time will be the equivalent of less than $2 "profit". If your bank wants to charge for ordering boxes, you would be better off just buying lots of wheat cents off of ebay.

2: Cents are fun to find wheat cents, varieties, and 2009s, but IMO, nickels were the most enjoyable simply because you are much more likely to find a key date, silver, or Buffalo nickel in a box than a key date Lincoln or Indian Head cent.

3: Don't hoard pre-1983 bronze cents unless you are certain you have a buyer at more than face value. Learned that the hard way by accumulating over 11,000 in a bucket that I ultimately dumped in a coinstar.

4: Check your local coinstar machines. If any of them offer gift cards for any retailer that you are likely to spend $25 at, dump your rejects for a gift card and don't spent hours rolling coins and possibly souring your relationship with your local bank.

When it comes to roll hunting pennies, obviously look for wheat cents, Indian Head cents, and foreign change. I have found dimes in customer wrapped rolls plenty of times - those usually have the best yields because the machines kick out foreign coins. Check all 1998, 1999, and 2000 for WAMs, and all 1992s for CAMs. There are other varieties too, but WAMs are popular, common-ish and can sell for a few dollars on ebay.
Rest in Peace

Edit: I forgot to say to the forum

with everything that Finn235 stated and I would just like to add a little more. Try to use the same teller each time. It is important to build a relationship with him/her. Bring in a gift card for coffee once in a while and briefly talk with them, tell them a little bit about your hobby and or collection. Also, if there is more than one location of the bank that you have an account with, alternate between them and again, try to go to the same teller each time. And most importantly, be nice with them! Even if they have attitude. If the attitude continues build a relationship with a different teller. It's amazing how a little communication goes a long way. And, well there really are two equally important things to remember, I've already said to be nice, the other is to have fun! After all, this is a hobby for most and should be fun! Happy hunting
