I did a box of pennies for a change this week. It was only my second ever, the first having been several years ago. I was surprised that I found 8 wheat pennies, none valuable.

Is it normal to find that many Wheaties in a box?

In my opinion, not really. But take my opinion with a grain of salt as I have only opened about 3 or so boxes and found about 4 or 5 wheats average. I've heard some people get none, and then there are some like this guy:

I would say that is about right or even a little low. I have found 234 LWC this year so far. I do not keep track of the number searched though.

I haven't ever gotten a box of cents, but from what I've seen posted here, that sounds about right.

I assume they were later dates?

After 750,000 searched in 2 1/2 years my average per box was 7.8. Lately it has been 8-12 per box, so yea, normal.

Hey CrazyB. A few questions for you.

How many Indian Heads?

Am I right that you have done 300 boxes?

How many pre1940's?

How many low mintage or rare wheats?

Thanks for sharing

I was averaging 15-20 wheats per box back in 2016. I went through maybe 3 boxes a month. I lost track of my findings, however I did land a 1905 IHC, maybe a dozen or so wheats from the teens and twenties.

I spent some time searching for varieties as well. Depending on what you look for it can take some time to go through a box of cents. I've found quite a few clashes, some RPM's, DDO's and DDR's, one Cud from 1983.... I've given up being concerned about your average die cracks and even found clashes on mid 80s are somewhat common.

I really enjoy the hunt. Finding a 100 year old coin in common change is pretty darn cool.

I'm trying to fill albums from circulated coins. Nickles may be next, but that might be harder for me as my wife doesn't appreciate me having money tied up in rolls of coins. She just doesn't get it

I average about 10 wheats per box when I do them.

As with dimes, I strongly recommend getting rolls from as many different banks as possible instead of boxes... batches of $5-$10 at each depending... and then going back to the banks where the best rolls came from. I've found many good little hoards of wheats and even some Indians that way.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

spruett,

Of the Wheaties I found, one was from the 1930's, two from the 1940's, and the rest from the 1950's.
