I recently purchased a 1970 Specimen Set (PCGS certified), but it did not include the original case and was looking to acquire a case to complete the package.

https://www.PCGS.com/SetRegistry/ca...edset/165435

They don't seem to come up too often.

Haxby has a mintage of 100, while Charelton has 1000

Do you think it is better to try and find a case without the coins? What would be a fair price? or just purchase a set with the coins and sell the duplicate coins?

In terms of valuing the set, is this a close approximation for a realizable selling price? Higher/Lower? Coins and Canada has some numbers, but a little sparse, sets seem to range from $250 CAD to $1000+

$150 - 1 cent SP 67RD
? - 5 cent SP 68 - Tied highest (1 of 2)
$50 - 10 cent SP 66
$100 - 25 cent SP 67
$60 - 50 cent SP 65
$30 - 1 dollar SP 66
? - Case

Very nice grade on the 5c...

As for value, it depends. They usually fetch between $400 to $700 in auctions with the cases (raw and in ICCS flips). Sandy Campbell was selling a few 1970 VIP specimen sets in PCGS holders at Nuphilex a few years ago. A complete set in SP-67 was $1000. I paid a similar price for one of my sets, but it was Pittman's set (bit of a pedigree there). Over the years, I have bought about four sets... the ones with the strong cameos are beautiful.

J&M coins usually sells 1970 singles in ICCS flips, check out the back pages of a Canadian Coin News to see what he sells the singles for...

Thanks SPP! Helpful info, though I wonder if they actually get close to prices they are asking for the $1 SP 66 - $400 or SP 65 quarter for $130. I thought the SP dollar were relatively common, maybe all the raw coins don't approach a 66.

The SP 67 benchmark of $1000 is a good reference point to keep in mind, if I look to upgrade, especially the $0.10 and $0.50 and it will help me keep my spending in check.

I agree on the cameo, they look great and the $0.05 looks fantastic. It would be nice to find a better dime, it just doesn't have the same look as the rest. I guess that is what makes the hunt so much fun.
