Hello everyone,

Great community you have here! This is my first post.

I was offered 2 Byzantine Gold Coins. I need your help to ID & Authenticate these 2 pieces.

According to my research one is:

PHOCAS 602-610 AD.
w: 4.0g
d: 20mm

& the other one:

THEOPHILUS 829-842 AD.
w: 3.9g
d: 19mm

Is it possible to tell if these are authentic coins from the images?

Many Thanks for your help!

Hi cmaroun and welcome to CCF.

Not my area of collecting but the Theopilus coin seems to be a die match for a coin that has been documented in the fake coin reports.

Both probably made in good quality gold, but
the Phocas looks to be suspiciouly too round for my liking.

how can we be sure these are not genuine? is it the weight 3.9g vs 4.30g ~ 4.44g for the genuine ones?

If they are fake, they are worth gold alloy value only, less XRF testing fees, to find the purity of the gold.

Would be difficult to sell under any circumstances, until the purity of the gold is known.
