Obverse Shields cents. Single squeeze die cents. What to look for on these?

This is going to be a huge thread, so I'm making it two threads. One for the obverse and one for the reverse. This is huge. So fasten your seat belts. We will first start out with the dates and see what to look for. It seems like many look for notching on these and there are some with notching, but not as often as you think. Many are finding Machine Doubling a lot because they are looking next to the devices too closely. The thing is that these are showing a lot of distortion of the devices when you compare them with normal die examples. So take you time on these. You will realize that they are much easier to find when you know more about that to look for on these.

So on these doubled dies, the devices overall shape are altered. No need to look at edges of the devices to find Machine Doubling and think it is a doubled die. The devices will stand out on these doubled dies. If not, they they are too minor to consider.
Another point. All the devices are not allways affected the same on any doubled die. The hubbing can be different. Consider the 1972 doubled dies 1-8? They are all the class of doubled die, but each die has its own differences. What is that? One area of the devices will be affected differently than others. On the single squeeze the same is true. The slightest difference on the hubbing, means it is not that die. So all the doubling much match in order to be a certain die. Opposite dies maybe exchanged, the on the same die, they should always line up the same to be that die. Hope this helps. I've still got the reverse to consider, but it probably won't be done today.

Side by side helps us see it better. I probably should have made the images a bit smaller. But it was all I could do with the software I now use. (Paint)

Same here Coop. I do believe it can be done with the free image optimizer though. Only problem I have is figuring what the numbers and kb's mean. Maybe after I figure that out, I'll be able to resize optimally. It was only two years ago I uploaded my first pic. Still got a ways to go.

I just completed the new thread for the Shield cent reverses. So look for it.

Adding some new information to help searches a bit more on the shield cents:

I notice some are still having a little bit of problem with doubled dies, so I thought of something the other day that might help. When you look at the enclosed devices on letters/digits, have you noticed how the centers of these devices are affected? The show distortion more often than just looking at the devices. So I thought I would give show some examples to show you what I mean. When you look at these areas, you may think differently with this information?

On dates the devices that are doubled on the single squeeze dies reminds me of over inflated devices. The distort in shape and look wider, taller and every thing else that can happen to them:

The first image and the third images are normal dates to compare with the images.

LIBERTY:
On LIBERTY check the insides of 'B, E, R and the TY is often showing doubling. Sometimes it is at the top, other times at the bottoms. On the 'Y' you can see the top forks of that area showing wider branches on one or both on this device.

The key is to note the distortion making the devices larger. Stop looking at the sides of the devices, the spread will be noticed in the centers of the devices.
Motto:

These will occur a lot less on the motto areas for doubled dies. But a few examples are pictured. I noticed on the UST area sometimes shows dimples on the fields where the die snapped into the proper alignment.

Hope this helps with your searches.
