Hi there. Wondering if someone can help me identify this coin. It was my grandfather's and unfortunately I didn't know of him until he passed away a few months ago. So I don't have any information to even begin searching other than he was a huge coin collector and this one was on a sterling silver chain from Italy that he always wore around his neck.

This is not my area of knowledge, but it appears to be a Spanish real (or reales) of some sort.

Others will have better answers.

Possibly pretending to be a Spanish coin of some sort but, as is clearly stamped on the lower picture, it is a copy.

It's a jewelry imitation of an old Spanish 8 reales (dollar); you can see 1736 at the bottom of the reverse. Best case scenario, this might be solid silver, but it is likely plated. Even though many of us here are "serious" collectors, lots of us still have low-value novelty items that have some sentimental meaning.

It mimics a 8 reales
Propably the chain is more valuable than that round peace of metal it is holding.....

Do not let it disappoint you! It was your grandfather's, that alone gives it value.

These 1736-dated replica Spanish coins seem to be all over the place. I believe Disney World sells them, amongst others.

The design is actually copying a gold 8 escudos from Spanish Peru; a "pirate doubloon". These replicas can be found in any coloured finish, and most of them don't have COPY stamped into them like this one does.
