Thanks,

This coin has very nice VF detail. It's a shame that the roughness and pitting on the reverse will lower the grade considerably. I'd have to give this one a net grade of VG10.

I know, the pitting stinks! I was not sure how to approach this one. The details are nice. I wonder how it got so pitted? But not bad for a $2.00 buy.

Rick it looks much better from a distance, haha! I wish I could find something like this in the ground. The only thing I find with my metal detector is lunch money. I need a new White's metal detector but the AF does not pay me enough for one of those.

Rick, I assume I just measure it for thickness to see if it is a "Thick"? I have 4 of these 1859's, how thick should it be?

Jack

Sorry the 1859 is a thick planchet, I was confusing myself, our coins are the same, Variety 1 ,, they are quite a bit thicker than when the standards changed in 1864.

variety 1+2- 4.67 grams
variety 3- 3.11 grams

Hi Rick. Wasn't 1864 the year they transitioned from Bronze to copper-nickel? I think both types were produced in 1864. Mike

Hi Mike

Your absolutely correct, Variety 3 is the Bronze composition.
The cents went from copper -nickle to Bronze with both types being minted in 1864.
