A buddy of mine recently took me to a coin shop in the boonies. I purchased a handful of coins there, and this NJ Cent was, to me, the most intriguing. It appears to have VF details on a uniformly micro-porous planchet. But for an annoying "scrub" on the reverse shield, the two sides are well balanced, grade-wise. It looks to be one of the large shield varieties.

I'm hoping that one of our keen-eyed colonial collectors can provide me with a Maris number. I had the new Bowers book on colonials but can't seem to now locate it! Help is much appreciated ....

@ Icutler .... Yep, looks like you nailed it - Maris # 31-L .... Thanks, again!

I found good pics for comparison on CoinFacts - http://www.coinfacts.com/colonial_c...aris_31L.htm

It's considered a common variety, yet I don't run across many halfway decent examples in my travels, nowadays.
