What do you think it is worth now? From your pix this is what it looks like. Just damaged more than a mint caused error.

to CCF. I agree with it being damaged on purpose,not a mint error.

Fair enough, just something a mate gave me to see if it would fetch anything, coudldn't find much about it from google so I thought I'd ask the experts. He says he got it from a roll of 2 dollar coins he received from a supermarket. If I was to weigh it would it's weight be proof that metal wasn't machined off in some manner?

The weight of most coins doesn't change as much as we would expect from wear, but it does change.

A newly minted $2 should weight 6.6 grams, and a well-circulated example I just weighed on a good digital scale showed 6.56g.

It's not especially easy to remove that much metal from a coin as small as a $2 with tooling and leave the rims undamaged - but nonetheless possible.

To your question: It would help to know the weight and you'd need a digital scale that resolves to 0.01g

It weighed in at 6.22g. so I guess it's just damaged... :(
