There is a piece in upper right that appears to be stamped out? Can any one say if this would be a mint error from 1847. Looks to me like the star has been struck into the edge?

Probably just damage, but better pictures would help to be 100%.

That's what I thought at first but at closer look in person the star seems to match up perfect with the impression on the edge. Maybe wishful thinking. Sent it away to have grading and research done.

It is definitely PMD. Which grading service did you send it to?

I sent it to ANACS. For grading and research.

The star impression would not go into the coin it would be raised. It is Post Mint Damage as others have stated, heck of a find Marine!

ANACS is probably the best place to send it.

I'd like to see a SHARP closeup of that area PLUS there appears to be something on the rim near Star 7.

And IMO for research Coin World would be a better place to get an opinion.

ANACS will assign a grade and authenticate it. Right now, it's better to get it in a TPG holder so the OP knows the coin is not a fake.

I will be sure to post a pic and the findings when I get it back from ANACS. I will also post the high res pics I get back from them. Hoping for the best, expecting the minimum..... The history on stuff almost 200 years old is addicting.

So ANACS gave the coin a EF40 but they also gave it a (cleaned ).....
That was a little disappointing seeing as how all I did was wipe the dirt off of it with fingers and water and before I realized what it was since I pulled it from the ground. I guess on a positive note it is still considered a rare coin from a rare mint with less than 225 known have survived. Hey 226 now. As to value I guess not too concerned. I have a pretty cool find to hang on the wall.
