1981 D Quarter, How Did This Get Past The Mint?

Genodat New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 03/21/2018 12:07 am I got this as change. I Found it in my possession, while paying the automatic checkout stand/it wouldn't accept this quarter. I have no real idea where I was given it "AS" change... The planchet's are slightly overhanging the copper and IT'S thin/underweight. And is thinner on one edge/thinns along its diameter. The Reed Marks are still present on the copper so IT was definitely made this way. Besides being Uber Dirty:-) I am "Asumming" this quarter is authentic and an error coin? That would be environmental damage, so it escaped the mint as a normal coin and was, at some point, exposed to an acidic environment. spru Bedrock of the Community United States 12477 Posts	Posted 03/21/2018 01:06 am My first comment was with only seeing the now third pic of the reverse comparison. Seeing the edge confirms my suspicion based on the description. Acid, whether in soil or an intentional concentrated application, will eat away the copper core more quickly than the CuNi cladding on either side. That creates a trough on the edge like what is seen on your coin. It doesn't much matter in this case, but make it a practice to always hold coins by the edge and not the faces.
