What are some proverbial do's and don't's? 1800s-now. Lots of variety, he has just newly acquired it so I offered to help go through some of it, and look up prices he should expect. As well as to hopefully build a decent repertoire with a new/old collection in town.

From what I understand it came from his grandfather, lots of silver. Lots of slabbed, and lots of errors.

I guess a "proverbial don't" is don't clean anything. A "Do" may be make a list of everything.

Documentation and research is the priority now. We are here as a resource along with other sites and books.

Don't clean any of the coins. Make sure you list everything (write them down or use a program like MS Excel or LibreOffice). Also,

Be patient. The family you're about to help may have no idea what they have and can quickly become overwhelmed. Set expectations low, it's always better to tell someone they have something special when they expect nothing than it is to tell them they have nothing when they think they're millionaires.
