This coin has been sitting in a box for numerous years; I recently put it up for online auction. I had no idea what it was at the time (could not find ANYTHING about it online) but it has received a lot of action. I am just curious what this coin might be, what it might be worth (though I will find out in 5 days;-), and when it was struck or any story behind it.

Thanks in advance for your time.

W.T.

looks like a trade token. I don't have the US book on tokens, but I'm sure someone here does.

My dad lived in the area, and I'll guess at the time this was made, it was probably refining gold and silver ore from nearby Silverton mines. Near WWII, the Durango smelter was later converted to Uranium processing. I'm unsure on the date of the token, but I think the smelter was running from the 1880s to late 1940s, if that helps.

Oh Wow That must have been one heck of a trade token- it sold for $665
This has certainly aroused my curiosity... Methinks that I need to add a Rulau book to my numismatic library

Thank you all for your informed responses... I appreciate all the interest and info.

Yes, the coin went for $660, which for sitting in a box across country for 15 year or so is pretty good. I also need to get myself one of those reference books!
