Hi,guys.
Sorry my ignorance. But this nickel is very dark. Almost black. Why?

to CCF. It is not a proof,or a cameo or an error. It has toned that color from being circulated over the years. It may have been coated with something in the past that partially worn away, shellac comes to mind but I don't know why anyone would do that to that particular coin. Anyway, value is five US cents.Hope you stick around and enjoy our great site.

Hello John. Thank you for clarifying. It was probably someone's lucky coin and did a good job, is very beautiful, looks like a veneer.

I would keep it as your own lucky charm.

to the CCF.

Interesting that you came across this coin in Brazil ... but that does not change the facts about the coins surfaces.

It is not a Proof strike ... rather as others have suggested a circulation strike example which has seen situations where the surfaces have become darkened over time.

It does indeed exhibit what we know as 'circulation cameo' with the lighter in appearance legends and devices contrasting against the darker fields.

It is indeed a lovely coin ... alas worth 5 cents ... but to a collector of these priceless.

Thanks for the comments.
Money walks a lot, which explains why this coin is in Brazil.
It is part of an old collection that does not see sunlight for at least thirty years. Just curious about this coin, it seems artificial the black area, striking the brightness and contrast. It will be well guarded, even if it is worth 5c, it has a valuable look.
