Thanks all! These coins from Cilicia are really fascinating.

I've been googling around and can't seem to find much info on Baal/Baaltars except that he was the "Persian Zeus". Any mythology buffs care to weigh in?

"Baal", as I understand it, is a generic name for a god in western Semitic (eg. Phoenician, Hebrew) cultures. The Biblical Baal of the Old Testament, for example, is usually identified as the Phoenician god Hadad; other biblical passages refer to "the baals" (plural).

Generally, if a culture worshipped a sky god of some kind, the Greeks identified that god with Zeus. Hadad was a rain god, reflecting the importance of the regular arrival of the rains for the productivity of the land on the Phoenician coast, so in that aspect the Greeks probably would have associated him as Zeus.

I don't think terribly much is known about the religion of pre-Greek Cilician cultures; I don not know how "Phoenician" they were (they use Phoenician script on this coin) or whether their chief deity would have been called "Baal" or something similar. It's possible "Baal" is simply a modern cataloguer's shorthand for "Middle-eastern unidentified deity".
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
