do you remember the first time you looked at a coin book and thought "wow, what a cool coin", for me it was the 1/000 large cents.

Well, I was at the annual Willimantic CT coin show when I came across this reasonably priced little beauty and just had to pull the trigger. Very late die state to say the least.

I could have written that myself. It's hard not to wonder what the engraver was thinking...

Too bad it didn't have the other obverse.

As for what the engraver was thinking, it was probably somewhere along the lines of "what does it matter, I probably won't have a job next week." At the time there was a lot of discussion going on in Congress as to whether or not the mint should be abolished. It barely squeaked through a vote to give it an extension in life in 1802.
