Bought my first roman coin yesterday at the local coin show! Because everyone in my family are complete ancient newbies, we couldn't guess any further than "It might be Licinius I"

Roman, yes, but not imperial. Your coin appears to me to be a Roman provincial from the mint at Viminacium. Reverse has a goddess standing between a lion and bull, if I remember the scene correctly. I haven't worked out the portrait side yet, but it isn't Licinius.

The reverse of these coins are like yours:

I think both sides of this coin of Trajan Decius match yours:

Huh, the display I bought it from said it was "Roman imperial, 300-500 AD". I honestly find it cooler the older it is.

Trajan Decius: IMP CAES C MES Q DECIVS PF AVG

Portrait threw me for a loop; it looks a lot more like Philip I, but then I saw the C MES Q in the name.

Perhaps they just modified the titles and kept using Philip's portrait?

Interesting piece. I don't know too much about Roman provincials, but I got my first (Philip I, Antioch) from a junk bin a couple weeks ago.

Whomever you bought it from doesn't sound too well versed in Roman history or numismatics.

Edit: grammar
