I'd say someone was rubbing that coin with an acetone-soaked Q-tip... the purple toning is most affected in the large, open fields, with a halo around the devices.

No, I think it's primarily because the coloring is unnatural.

Put it outside on a windowsill for a few weeks, flipping it periodically. It will tone nicely, albeit brown, but it will look nice.
