Is that normal wear going on around her ear? It looks odd to me.

@ spruett001, not odd at all, quite normal wear pattern for that portrait.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I trust you, DBM, but it seems rather unusually truncated to the southwest as if a plateau were created.

The wear is normal. The coin appears to have been given a very good strike when minted.
