I just found 2 of these in the same roll! I don't know whether they are copper or zinc, I will have to weigh them. I wanted to confirm the small date first.

Hi
That is the small date. Here is a web site that will help you recognise the differences.

Are they rare enough to command a premium or just a "common" variety?

Common. The cool thing to do is make a "mini collection" of all 7 from 1982!

They're pretty much common, but I've only come across about 12 Philadelphia Small Dates and 3 Denver Small Dates. Compared to 140 of the Philly Large Dates and 59 of the Denver Large Dates. (No knowledge of composition as I need to get a scale first.)

I always thought a small date was a midget.

Thanks for the great link, Richard. It aptly demonstrated the difference so's I can know what I am looking at, now.

I read it here on another thread and use this method first. The quickest way to differentiate between the 1982 small and large date is the large date 2 will be next to the rim, the smaller date is quite a ways farther from the rim. Compare the two side by side and you will see what I mean. I don't have to use my magnifying glass when sorting.

Out of the seven varieties, the toughest for me to find in my neck of the woods (NW) in order of scarcity is:
1)1982 copper small date - found 1
2)1982 zinc small date - 3
3)1982-D zinc small date - 14

I quit saving the large date varieties as I have over a roll of each. The small ones need to catch up!

florida, you don't need to buy a scale to tell the difference between zinc and copper.

Since I didn't have a popsicle stick like some here use, I used a 1/2tspn measuring cup with a flat handle. I put a pre-82 cent, 1960 in my case, in the measuring cup. Balance it on a roll of cents, or I like nickels better. Move the handle of the measuring cup back and forth on the roll until a post-82(zinc) cent doesn't lift the cup up, and a pre-82 (copper) cent lifts the cup up and drops the handle to the desktop.

Once I found the balancing point that works best, I drew a line on the paper roll AND the measuring cup handle. I then drew a line farther up the measuring handle where I place the edge of the coin I'm weighing. So now, there will be no discrepancies. I have the exact point where the measuring cup will be placed on the roll, plus the exact point where the coin being weighed will be placed. Make sure the line you drew on the roll is always facing straight up. I also keep my fingers on the cup part when placing the coin to be weighed on the handle then let go. That way dropping the coin on the handle doesn't move the measuring spoon or cause any undo force to raise the cup. I guess all this depends on what kind of measuring spoons you have, or heck, go buy a popsicle at the corner store!

Very nice little "trick" to find the difference in weight lperry3. Kinda cuddled a little when I read your posting, but makes perfect sense. Kudos.

Has any one ever tried the drop it on the table method?
If it sounds like a thud it's zinc if it has a ring to it it's copper.

I tried the drop method then went back and weighed them and I was wrong about 40% of the time! I think HOW it hits the surface is as important as the composition. I have to rely on the scales because my ears deceive me.
