My son found a 2000 P Mass. quarter in our change jar, it has NO copper in the rim. It looks just like a silver quarter, but the Philly mint didn't make silver quarters did they? I can't get a photo of it, I can't get my camera to focus well enough. I'll try harder tonight after the boys are all in bed. Is it possible that it could be silver?

More than likely what you have is a standard quarter plated with some other metal.

That is the first thing I thought, but the cartwheeling is still there. If it were plated there would be no cartwheeling would there?

Just for the heck of it, can you weigh it?

Unfortunately I don't have a scale to weigh it. I have added photos, though they aren't very good, I know. Suggestions are more than welcome!

Just an idea. You could make a Balance out of some household materials as a science experiment or test and then Balance the balance with two exact quarters then put the silvery looking one on there and see what it does. Maybe your son depending on his age would find it interesting!

If it has a P or D as a Mint mark then it is clad.
only S made silver so if it has anything other than P or D it is nothing.
